Women's hydration — special considerations.
Menstrual cycle
Hormonal changes during menstruation can affect fluid retention and increase dehydration risk. Some women need an additional 200–300ml during their period.
Pregnancy
Pregnant women need an additional 300ml per day above their baseline. The American College of Obstetricians recommends 8–10 cups (2–2.5L) daily during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding increases fluid needs by approximately 700ml per day to maintain milk supply. Nursing mothers should aim for an additional 2–3 cups daily.
Hormonal contraceptives
Some women experience increased fluid retention from hormonal birth control, which may mask dehydration. Regular intake remains important regardless.
