6 common hydration myths — examined.

Myth 01

"You must drink 8 glasses of water every day."

VERDICT: Largely a myth.
The "8×8" rule — eight 8-ounce glasses per day — is one of the most repeated pieces of health advice in existence. However, a 2002 review by Dr. Heinz Valtin in the American Journal of Physiology examined the published evidence and found no scientific backing for this specific recommendation. The figure likely traces back to a 1945 document from the US Food and Nutrition Board that recommended approximately 2.5 liters of water per day — but included a key clause that most of this amount would come from food. That qualifier was dropped in popular retellings, and the "8 glasses" shorthand persisted for decades. This does not mean hydration is unimportant — it genuinely is. But the right amount depends on your body weight, activity level, climate, diet, and health status, which is why personalised estimates are more meaningful than a single universal number.

Myth 02

"Coffee and tea dehydrate you."

VERDICT: Mostly false for moderate intake.
Caffeine is a mild diuretic, meaning it mildly increases urine output. This has led to the widespread belief that coffee and tea "dehydrate" you. However, research does not support this conclusion for moderate consumption. A review published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics (Maughan & Griffin, 2003) found that caffeine consumed in moderate amounts — up to approximately 300–400mg per day — does not produce a net dehydrating effect in regular caffeine consumers. The water content of coffee and tea exceeds any additional fluid lost from mild diuresis, meaning these beverages contribute positively to daily fluid balance. The European Food Safety Authority considers moderate caffeine intake (up to 400mg/day for healthy adults) compatible with a balanced diet. Very high caffeine intake, or caffeine consumed by individuals sensitive to it, may warrant additional water consumption.

Myth 03

"If you feel thirsty, you are already dangerously dehydrated."

VERDICT: An oversimplification.
This claim is often used to encourage people to drink before feeling thirsty — sometimes leading to overdrinking. The reality is more nuanced. Thirst is the body's normal physiological signal that fluid intake may be beneficial. Mild dehydration (around 1–2% of body weight) can develop before noticeable thirst in some situations — particularly during exercise or in heat, when sweat rate can exceed conscious awareness. However, research suggests that for healthy adults in everyday, non-exercise situations, drinking in response to thirst is generally adequate. The more serious concern applies to older adults (65+), in whom the sensitivity of the thirst mechanism diminishes with age. This population may benefit from proactive hydration schedules rather than relying solely on thirst cues. American College of Sports Medicine guidance recommends proactive hydration during exercise — not waiting for thirst — as sweat losses can accumulate rapidly during intense activity.

Myth 04

"Clear urine means you are perfectly hydrated."

VERDICT: Partially true — but clearer is not always better.
Urine colour is a widely used hydration indicator, and pale, straw-yellow urine is generally considered a sign of adequate hydration. However, very clear or colourless urine is not necessarily better — it may indicate that you are drinking more than your kidneys need to filter, which over time could put unnecessary strain on kidney function, though this effect is minor in most healthy adults. A more clinically significant concern is that regularly colourless urine during endurance exercise can be a signal of overdrinking and potential dilutional hyponatremia risk. Additionally, B vitamins (particularly B2/riboflavin) can turn urine bright yellow regardless of hydration status, and some medications affect urine colour. So while urine colour is a practical rough guide, it has limitations and should not be interpreted in isolation.

Myth 05

"Drinking more water will improve your skin."

VERDICT: Evidence is limited for normally hydrated individuals.
This claim is pervasive in beauty and wellness content, but the scientific evidence is more modest than popular presentations suggest. Severe dehydration does visibly affect skin — reducing elasticity (poor skin turgor is a clinical sign of dehydration) and causing dryness. Correcting dehydration can restore normal skin appearance. However, research does not consistently support the idea that consuming water above adequate hydration levels produces additional skin benefits in people who are already well-hydrated. A systematic review published in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology (Palma et al., 2015) found limited high-quality evidence for direct skin benefits from increased water intake in normally hydrated individuals. Good skin health involves multiple factors including genetics, sun protection, diet quality, and skincare practices — not water intake alone.

Myth 06

"Sports drinks are better than water for hydration."

VERDICT: Depends heavily on the situation.
For the majority of everyday situations and exercise sessions under 60 minutes, plain water is entirely adequate for hydration in healthy adults. Sports drinks were developed for specific contexts: prolonged endurance exercise (typically 60+ minutes) in conditions where sodium and potassium lost in sweat need replacement, and where maintaining blood glucose may support performance. Many commercially available sports drinks contain significant sugar and calories that are unnecessary for casual exercisers or people simply trying to stay hydrated throughout the day. Regularly consuming high-sugar sports drinks without the corresponding exercise load may contribute to excess calorie intake. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks primarily for exercise lasting longer than 1 hour, or in high-heat or high-intensity conditions. For most daily hydration, water remains the recommended choice.
